Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry is a fantastic tree. The root pouch is a great product to grow things in. The instructions in the package to plant a tree (or shrub) into the ground while still in the root pouch or void warranty is beyond me.
TLDR: even if they tell you to, don't plant anything into the ground while still in a Root Pouch. Rip that thing off and plant it like everyrhing else.
The instructions were to cut slits in the side of the pouch, and plant with the top of the root pouch under the soil level, trimming it down if needed. If exposed to air, the pouch will dry out and damage the root ball. It listed all the benefits of planting something in a root pouch and that removing it would risk damage to the tree. Does it make any sense? No. Did I do it anyway as instructed? Yes.
2yrs later, I can tell you that yes it is still alive, but I have slow growing plants outgrowing it the serviceberry. Same for a Fothergilla I ordered. Both have slow stunted growth. And a yet to biodegrade root pouch (yes, with slits in it) under the soil. Of over 300 plants I've put in the ground in the last 2.5 years, these are the slowest growing, both with stunted leaves. In what world does a Picea Orientalis outgrow an amelanchier? One where the amelanchier was planted in cloth grow sack.
