Zig Zag® Redbud is what happens when nature leans into geometry. Every branch grows in a dramatic, angular zig-zag pattern from trunk to tip, giving this small ornamental tree a sculptural, almost modern-art presence. Even in winter, when the tree stands bare, its branching structure steals attention. In early spring, magenta buds swell along those striking lines and burst open into deep fuchsia blooms that seem to wrap around the wood itself. It's a spring performance that feels electric against the still-cool air.
As the flowers fade, bright green, heart-shaped leaves emerge and soften the bold framework with lush seasonal texture. Through summer, the foliage fills in beautifully, offering light shade and vibrant color. Come fall, the leaves shift to attractive orange tones, extending its ornamental appeal well beyond bloom time. Zig Zag® Redbud fits comfortably into residential landscapes as a specimen tree, understory accent, or focal point in mixed native plantings. Its moderate size makes it ideal for smaller yards without sacrificing visual impact.
This exceptional cultivar of native Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis 'Seirb') performs reliably in full sun to partial shade. Like other redbuds, it supports early pollinators by providing one of the first nectar and pollen sources of the season. It pairs beautifully with native perennials and woodland companions, especially when designing a North American-inspired garden. While many redbuds bloom beautifully, Zig Zag® Redbud adds something more: year-round structure and unmistakable personality. It's not just a treeit's a statement piece.

Family: Fabaceae · Common Name: Redbud
Redbud is a fascinating genus of small trees with several species and many varieties and cultivars. Native to the eastern and southern US, Redbuds are scattered throughout the countryside’s and are one of the first trees to flower in early spring, along with Dogwoods. Redbuds require well draining soil even to the point of being rocky. If planted in wet or poorly draining soils the trees will decline in health rather quickly. Best planted high and dry!

Interesting Notes About ZIG ZAG® REDBUD
- Geometry in Motion: All redbuds naturally grow in an alternating pattern, but Zig Zag® dramatically exaggerates this trait, making its branching far more pronounced than typical varieties.
- Cauliflorous Blooming: Redbuds produce flowers directly along bare branches and even older wood, a botanical trait known as cauliflory.
- Pollinator Powerhouse: As one of the earliest blooming native trees, redbuds provide critical nectar and pollen for emerging bees in early spring.
- Native Range Legacy: Eastern Redbud naturally grows from Ontario south to Texas and across the eastern United States, making it widely adaptable.
- Understory Excellence: Redbuds evolved beneath taller hardwood canopies, making them ideal companions for oaks, maples, and pines in layered landscape designs.
