Hanska Plum is a living piece of American horticultural history, prized for its resilience, beauty, and richly flavored fruit. In early spring, bare branches are cloaked in pure white blossoms that signal the season ahead and lend a graceful presence to the landscape. By late summer into fall, the tree rewards patience with small, glossy red plums that are as charming as they are delicious.
Bred specifically for cold climates where many fruit trees struggle, Hanska Plum is a heritage hybrid developed from American and Chinese plum species. The fruit carries the smooth skin of a plum with a flavor often described as apricot-like, especially when cooked, leading to its long-standing reputation and occasional mislabeling as a "plumcot." Despite the nickname, Hanska Plum contains no apricot ancestry, making its flavor profile all the more intriguing. The yellow flesh surrounds a very small stone, offering generous edible fruit perfect for fresh eating, baking, sauces, and preserves.
Fast-growing and early bearing, Hanska Plum often fruits in its second year and matures into a compact, attractive tree well-suited to smaller gardens. It typically reaches a medium quickly, then settles into a manageable size that functions beautifully as both a fruiting and light shade tree. Reliable, productive, and undemanding, Hanska Plum is ideal for gardeners seeking something authentic, cold-hardy, and genuinely different from supermarket fruit.

Interesting Notes About HANSKA PLUM
- A Northern Breeding Triumph: Hanska was developed by renowned plant breeder N. E. Hansen at the South Dakota Experiment Station to thrive in harsh, cold climates.
- Fruited Almost Immediately: The original trees first produced fruit in 1906 while still only two years old, an unusually early-bearing trait for fruit trees.
- Not a Plumcot After All: Though often mislabeled, Hanska contains no apricot genetics; the confusion stems from historic naming of Chinese plums with apricot-like flavor.
- Exceptionally Cold Hardy: This tree was bred specifically for regions where winter temperatures make fruit growing difficult, offering reliable harvests where others fail.
- Well-Suited for Organic Gardens: Hanska is rarely troubled by serious pests or diseases and can produce fruit even when grown alone, making it a favorite for low-input orchards.
