Garden Candy® Amy Jo Itoh Intersectional Peony is like a ray of sunlight brought to life in flower form. From its soft blush-pink buds to its fully open, medium-yellow blossoms, she offers a gentle, glowing presence in the garden. Her wide, wavy guard petals give each bloom a chrysanthemum-like texture, and with flower forms ranging from single to nearly full double, every stem feels like a small bouquet. Most commonly semi-double, these huge blooms are gently fragrant and appear in late spring, standing proudly atop upright stems that don't require staking.

What sets Garden Candy® Amy Jo Itoh Intersectional Peony apart—beyond her good looks—is her performance. With an average of three buds per stem and multiple side buds, this prolific bloomer can flower for up to three weeks, outlasting many traditional peony varieties. The petals are clean and flare-free, showcasing a clear yellow hue rarely seen in peonies. The subtle red stigmata in the center add a striking contrast, making each flower even more photogenic. As a member of the Garden Candy® series, she is part of a trusted group of Itoh peonies known for their reliability, beauty, and ease of growth.

Bred by acclaimed hybridizer Don Smith and named after his wife, Garden Candy® Amy Jo Itoh Intersectional Peony represents the best of modern peony breeding—long bloom time, sturdy form, disease resistance, and unrivaled garden impact. Its finely cut, deep green foliage remains attractive well into fall, turning a subtle red before dormancy. Perfect for sunny borders, front-of-bed focal points, or cutting gardens, this peony brings both heart and horticultural heritage to your landscape.

GARDEN CANDY® AMY JO ITOH INTERSECTIONAL PEONY Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil: Prefers well-draining loam or sandy loam, slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.5 to 7.5). Add compost or aged manure in fall or spring for best performance.
  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to part shade (at least 6 hours daily). Can benefits from afternoon shade in warmer zones (8–9), but keep in mind that more sun = more blooms!
  • Irrigation Needs: Moderate water needs; prefers consistent moisture. Water deeply during dry spells, especially during bloom season. Avoid soggy roots; mulching helps retain moisture.
  • Feeding & Nutrients: Feed with a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer in early spring, and avoid excessive nitrogen to prevent leafy growth over flowering. Light top-dressing of compost in fall strengthens root development.
  • Pruning & Maintenance: Cut back foliage to ground after frost in fall. Remove spent blooms to maintain plant vigor, no staking necessary; upright stems are strong and self-supporting
