Sawa Chidori Upright Japanese Maple is a rare, collector-favorite tree celebrated for its reticulated variegation and graceful, ever-changing foliage. In early spring, new leaves emerge creamy white with pink, peach, and rose tints, all delicately outlined by striking green veins. As the season progresses, the colors transition to soft amber and pale yellow-green before settling into rich summer green.

Come autumn, Sawa Chidori Upright Japanese Maple bursts into fiery red and orange foliage, creating a dramatic contrast against its green bark and reddish new growth. This upright, bushy Japanese maple making it an ideal choice for small gardens, courtyards, or as a striking focal point in mixed borders.

Discovered in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture in 1988, this ornamental Japanese maple performs best in partial shade where its unique variegation can be fully appreciated. With its changing leaf colors, elegant form, and seasonal drama, Sawa Chidori Upright Japanese Maple is a must-have for collectors and gardeners seeking a truly exceptional maple.

SAWA CHIDORE UPRIGHT JAPANESE MAPLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

This ornamental tree is easy to maintain with just a little attention to light and soil. Follow these care tips for success:

  • Light: Prefers partial shade; tolerates morning sun but protect from hot afternoon rays to preserve variegation.
  • Soil: Plant in elevated, well-drained soil; Japanese maples dislike soggy roots.
  • Watering: Water consistently, especially in summer heat. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter to open the canopy and highlight bark and foliage. Avoid heavy pruning.
  • Spacing: Allow 8–10 feet for mature width.
  • Fertilizer: Use a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in spring to encourage steady growth.
