If you love a tree with personality, Kandy Kitchen Dwarf Upright Japanese Maple is a stunning specimen that delivers bold color in a petite package. Discovered as a witch's broom mutation outside a Kandy Kitchen restaurant by Joe Stupka, this rare gem has become one of the most sought-after dwarf reds for collectors and small gardens alike.
New foliage bursts out cherry red in spring, gradually maturing to a deep maroon and then softening to green as the season progresses. Just when you think the show is over, fall ignites the tree in a glowing scarlet blaze, rivaling even the boldest maples in autumn landscapes. With leaves often no larger than a quarter, the delicate texture contrasts beautifully against its compact, rounded form.
This short-statured tree Kandy Kitchen Dwarf Upright Japanese Maple is the perfect choice for tight spaces, or as an accent near patios and walkways. While a little finicky preferring excellent drainage, afternoon shade, and a sheltered spot near the house its kaleidoscope of color makes it worth the extra care. This is a maple that transforms any garden corner into a four-season conversation piece.

KANDY KITCHEN DWARF UPRIGHT JAPANESE MAPLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips
- Recommended Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining soil with added organic matter. Avoid soggy or compacted ground; raised beds or mounds work well. Slightly acidic soil encourages the best foliage color.
- Sun Exposure: Best with morning sun and afternoon shade. Tolerates dappled light or bright filtered sun. Protect from intense heat to prevent leaf scorch.
- Irrigation Needs: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells. Deep water weekly in summer for root health. Mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture.
- Feeding & Nutrients: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Supplement with compost or organic matter to improve soil texture. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can stress dwarf cultivars.
- Pruning & Maintenance: Minimal pruning needed simply remove dead or crossing branches. Best pruning time: late winter before spring growth begins. Avoid heavy shaping; the natural compact globe form is part of its charm.
