Ice Rain Deodar Cedar is a rare, cold-hardy cultivar of the beloved Himalayan Cedar. Its name, eisregen, is German for "ice rain" - and perfectly captures its shimmering blue-green to silver-blue needles that glisten with an icy cast, especially striking against the winter landscape.

With a naturally upright, pyramidal habit and slightly pendulous branches, this cedar grows at a moderate rate, maturing to a graceful specimen tree that commands attention without overwhelming a smaller landscape.

Discovered as a seedling in Afghanistan and introduced in Germany, Ice Rain Deodar Cedar is prized not only for its beauty but also for its exceptional cold tolerance. Highly adaptable once established, it thrives in partial to full sun, well-drained soil, and dry summer climates, making it a resilient and low-maintenance choice for gardeners. Deer resistant, drought tolerant, and evergreen year-round, Ice Rain Deodar Cedar is a refined yet hardy conifer for collectors and homeowners alike.

ICE RAIN DEODAR CEDAR Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

Ice Rain Deodar Cedar is remarkably easy to grow, with just a few conditions to keep in mind:

  • Light: Full sun for best color and growth; tolerates heat and dry summers.
  • Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil; avoid heavy, soggy conditions.
  • Watering: Moderate needs; water deeply during establishment, then drought tolerant.
  • Spacing: Plant 12+ feet apart in groupings or allow space as a single lawn specimen.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate, averaging 12–18 inches per year.
  • Pruning: Minimal—remove only damaged or competing branches. Train to a single leader when young to prevent splitting.
  • Interesting Notes About ICE RAIN DEODAR CEDAR

    • Eisregen means "ice rain" in German, reflecting its frosted winter-blue foliage.
