If blue is your garden's favorite color, then Bonny Blue Colorado Blue Spruce is about to become its brightest jewel. Selected by Roger Mackiness in Corbett, Oregon, this cultivar is known for its exceptionally short, narrow needles that glow an almost electric blue. Each needle sits tightly against the stem at a sharp angle, giving the tree a dense, plush texture that looks like it's been airbrushed by winter itself.

As it grows, Bonny Blue Colorado Blue Spruce shifts from a compact youngster into a formal, statuesque evergreen with a beautifully defined pyramidal silhouette. Though slower growing in its early years, it eventually matures into a mid-sized conifer that commands attention without overwhelming the space. From frosty mornings to midsummer sun, its color barely budges—staying vivid and eye-catching all year long.

Beyond beauty, this spruce brings brawn. Hardy to astonishingly low temperatures and adaptable to a range of soils, it is dependable in tough climates and urban environments. Its strong central leader, dense branching, and natural symmetry make it a standout specimen tree. For gardeners craving bold color, elegant structure, and an evergreen that stays bright and true, Bonny Blue Colorado Blue Spruce is as good as it gets.

BONNY BLUE COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Prefers well-drained soils: sandy, loamy, or rocky.
    • Tolerates a wide pH range.
    • Avoid wet or poorly drained sites to prevent root issues.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Requires morning sun for best overall health.
    • Will not tolerate full sun exposure in the south.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Moderate moisture during establishment (first 1–2 years).
    • Drought-tolerant once established.
    • Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
    • Do not allow standing water around the root zone.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply a balanced slow-release evergreen fertilizer in spring.
    • Mulch with bark or compost yearly to maintain even moisture.
    • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that may reduce needle color intensity.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Naturally forms a refined pyramidal shape; minimal pruning required.
    • If trimming is necessary, prune only the soft new growth ("candles").
    • Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter.
    • Deer generally avoid it, reducing wildlife damage concerns.

Interesting Notes About BONNY BLUE COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE

  • A Bright Blue Beauty: 'Bonny Blue' earns its name from its tiny, intensely blue needles—among the most brilliantly colored of any spruce.
  • A Pacific Northwest Discovery: Selected by Oregon plantsman Roger Mackiness, this cultivar originated in Corbett, Oregon, a region famous for exceptional conifer selections.
  • Tough as They Come: Rated to be cold hardy to zone 2 and tolerant of urban pollution, this spruce is built for extreme cold and challenging environments.
  • Needle Geometry Magic: Its needles are angled sharply toward the stem, creating a dense, full texture that makes the tree look ultra-smooth and meticulously groomed.
  • Slow Start, Grand Finish: Though its early growth is modest, Bonny Blue eventually matures into a large, formal evergreen with classic Colorado spruce character and superior color.
