Heartbeat Dwarf Weeping Japanese Maple is a dazzling weeping Japanese maple that lives up to its name with unforgettable red tones that pulse through the seasons. In spring, finely cut laceleaf foliage emerges in a vivid red—brighter and fresher than many other dissectum varieties. As summer arrives, the leaves soften to bronze-red and then to green, but new flushes of red continue to appear at the branch tips, creating a dynamic contrast of color throughout the warm months.

Low and wide-spreading, Heartbeat Dwarf Weeping Japanese Maple forms a cascading mound that grows broader than it does tall, typically reaching 2-4 feet in height and 6-8 feet across in its first decade. This growth habit makes it an excellent choice for garden borders, foundation plantings, and Japanese-style landscapes where flowing form and rich color are celebrated. Its deeply dissected leaves are held apart from one another, giving the tree a textural, almost airy appearance while maintaining a strong sculptural presence.

Autumn is when this specimen truly earns its name...its foliage bursts into an intense crimson red that seems to glow against fall's softer tones, stopping visitors in their tracks. Introduced from Australia and cold hardy rated in USDA zones 5-8, Heartbeat Dwarf Weeping Japanese Maple thrives in a range of climates, tolerating humidity and cold winters while delivering color and drama year after year. With its vigorous growth, striking texture, and season-spanning display, this Japanese maple is a living work of art for collectors and home gardeners alike.

HEARTBEAT DWARF WEEPING JAPANESE MAPLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

With care, 'Heartbeat' rewards gardeners with reliable growth, a spreading silhouette, and glowing seasonal transitions that stand out in any landscape.

  • Recommended Soil: Best in rich, well-drained soil with organic matter. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH. Mulch generously to conserve moisture and protect shallow roots.
  • Sun Exposure: Prefers morning sun with afternoon shade for best leaf color. Can handle slightly more sun in cooler regions. Protect from intense heat in hot climates to reduce leaf scorch.
  • Irrigation Needs: Maintain consistent, moderate watering throughout the growing season. Avoid drought stress, which can dull foliage color. Ensure good drainage to prevent root issues.
  • Feeding & Nutrients: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring. Avoid excess nitrogen, which encourages soft growth at the expense of color. Enrich with compost or leaf mold annually.
  • Pruning & Maintenance: Lightly prune in late winter to maintain its cascading habit. Remove any dead or damaged branches without disturbing its natural form. Vigorous grower - benefits from occasional shaping if used in smaller gardens.
