Beijing Gold® Chinese Tree Lilac takes everything gardeners love about lilacs and turns it into an unexpected four-season ornamental tree. In early summer, generous panicles of fragrant, soft primrose-yellow flowers appear above the dark green foliage, offering a refreshingly different color from the familiar purples, pinks, and whites associated with traditional lilacs. The blossoms arrive after many spring-flowering trees and shrubs have finished, extending seasonal color into the early summer landscape. Its upright habit and finer branching create a polished silhouette without the coarse appearance sometimes associated with other tree lilacs. Beautiful enough to stop traffic while blooming, it remains remarkably handsome long after the flowers disappear.

As summer gives way to autumn, the foliage can develop attractive shades of yellow, but even leaf drop doesn't end the show. Cinnamon-colored, cherry-like bark becomes increasingly noticeable as the tree matures, providing warm color and beautiful texture throughout winter. Beijing Gold® Chinese Tree Lilac can be trained as either a single-trunk tree or allowed to develop a multi-stemmed form, giving landscape designers tremendous flexibility. Its naturally attractive branching also means considerably less corrective pruning may be needed than with many other tree lilacs. From a lawn specimen or front-yard focal point to an allee along a driveway, this is a hardworking ornamental that refuses to be a one-season wonder.

Beijing Gold® Chinese Tree Lilac is also remarkably adaptable, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil while tolerating both acidic and alkaline conditions. Once established, it develops good drought tolerance, making its refined appearance surprisingly easy to maintain. With an expected mature height around 20 feet, it provides the presence of a flowering tree without consuming the enormous space required by many traditional shade trees. Gardeners searching for small flowering trees, fragrant summer-blooming trees, yellow-flowering lilacs, or four-season ornamental trees will find Beijing Gold® Chinese Tree Lilac especially compelling. The flowers may get your attention first, but its bark, foliage, form, adaptability, and seasonal changes are what make this rare lilac worth keeping in the spotlight all year.

BEIJING GOLD® CHINESE TREE LILAC Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Prefers reasonably moist, well-drained soil for best growth and flowering.
    • Adapts to a wide range of soil textures when adequate drainage is provided.
    • Tolerates both acidic and alkaline soil conditions.
    • Avoid locations that remain saturated for prolonged periods.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Performs best in full sun.
    • Provide six or more hours of direct sunlight for abundant flowering.
    • Open, sunny locations encourage strong branching and an attractive upright habit.
    • Allow sufficient room for the canopy to develop naturally.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Water consistently during the first several growing seasons while roots establish.
    • Deep, thorough watering encourages a strong root system.
    • Once established, Beijing Gold® demonstrates good drought tolerance.
    • Supplemental irrigation is beneficial during extended periods of heat and drought.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if additional nutrients are needed.
    • Organic compost can improve soil structure and support healthy root development.
    • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
    • Established trees growing vigorously may require little supplemental fertilizer.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Its naturally attractive branching habit requires relatively little corrective pruning.
    • If shaping is necessary, prune immediately after flowering to preserve the following season's blooms.
    • Remove dead, damaged, crossing, or poorly positioned branches as needed.
    • Can be maintained as either a single-trunk or multi-stemmed ornamental tree.
