Discover Loowit Japanese Hemlock, the tiny hemlock with a big story. Its miniature, rice-like needles—soft green tips punctuated by tiny brown buds—give this dwarf conifer a uniquely textured, almost sculpted appearance. Branchlets crowd together into a tight, rounded bun, making it feel more like a living garden ornament than a shrub. It's the kind of plant visitors lean in to inspect up close, drawn in by its delicate detail and serene presence.

This special selection has deep roots—literally and figuratively. Loowit Japanese Hemlock began as seed collected in the high alpine region of Fukushima Prefecture in Japan, home to some of the world's most beautiful conifer forms. It was later named in honor of Mt. St. Helens, the volcanic neighbor of Iseli Nursery, connecting two rugged mountain landscapes across the globe. That heritage shows in its resilience, slow growth, and quietly dramatic character.

Compact and thoughtful in its growth, Loowit Japanese Hemlock remains low and rounded, fitting effortlessly into rock gardens, troughs, or shaded woodland corners. With its slow, steady pace—just a couple of inches a year—it offers long-lasting structure and style without ever overwhelming a space. If you're looking for a conifer with both charm and story, this diminutive Japanese hemlock is the perfect little treasure.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Grows best in part shade to mostly shade.

    • Water deeply and consistently during warm months.
    • Mulch lightly to maintain moisture without smothering the shallow root system.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply a soft, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
    • Compost or leaf mold enhances soil structure and nutrient balance.
    • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that may disrupt its compact habit.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Naturally forms a tight mound—minimal pruning required.
    • Remove old needles annually to improve airflow.
    • Inspect periodically for pests, as hemlocks appreciate attentive care.
    • Excellent for tight spaces and specimen plantings where its form can be showcased.
