FYRE WING™ Jadeite Coral Bells has a softer, mythical personality. Its broad, palmate leaves are deeply divided making them appear like elegant wings, and a remarkable covering of fine hairs gives the fresh green foliage a smooth, comforting appearance. Morning dew, summer rain, and even delicate frost can collect across those fuzzy leaves like tiny jewels scattered across a dragon's emerald wings. The result is a foliage plant that rewards getting a little closer for an inspection.

FYRE WING™ Jadeite Coral Bells has a mounding habit and a wonderfully substantial presence among other perennials. The fresh foliage makes an excellent visual foil for darker, burgundy, bronze, silver, or vividly colored plants, allowing its intricate texture to do the contrasting rather than competing. Small white flowers rise above the foliage with a light, delicate effect, adding seasonal interest without stealing attention from those extraordinary leaves. In fall, the green foliage can take on subtle bronze tones, giving this dragon-winged treasure intrigue throughout the year.

Use FYRE WING™ Jadeite Coral Bells to bring fresh color and tactile interest to woodland-inspired borders, shaded pathways, perennial groupings, or anywhere ordinary green foliage simply doesn't cut it. Pair it with ferns, hostas, hellebores, or other dark-leaved coral bells, and let the textures mingle. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, it performs in full sun to part shade, with afternoon protection necessary where summer heat is intense. 'Jadeite' is one very handsome dragon to have guarding your shaded perennials.

FYRE WING™ JADEITE CORAL BELLS Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Grow in organically rich, moderately well-drained garden soil that holds some moisture without remaining saturated.
    • Improve poor or compacted soil with compost or other organic matter to support healthy root development and drainage.
    • Keep the crown at or slightly above the surrounding soil level to encourage good crown health.
    • Avoid locations where heavy soil stays waterlogged, particularly through winter.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Full sun to part shade is suitable, with the best exposure influenced by local summer temperatures.
    • Cooler climates can support more sunlight, while hot regions benefit from afternoon shade or filtered light.
    • Morning sun followed by afternoon protection can help maintain fresh foliage and reduce heat stress.
    • Woodland borders, perennial beds, garden edges, and lightly shaded pathways make excellent locations.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season while roots become established.
    • Once established, water thoroughly when the soil begins to dry rather than maintaining constantly wet conditions.
    • The fuzzy foliage can tolerate moderately dry conditions once established, but prolonged drought may still cause stress.
    • Provide additional irrigation during extended periods of heat, drought, or unusually dry winds.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply compost around the root zone in spring to provide gentle organic nutrition and improve soil health.
    • A balanced slow-release perennial fertilizer can be applied in spring when active growth begins.
    • Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage soft growth and detract from the plant's naturally tidy form.
    • Keep fertilizer away from the crown and water thoroughly after applying granular products.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Remove weathered, damaged, or winter-affected leaves in early spring as fresh growth emerges.
    • Cut spent flower stems near their base after flowering to maintain a neat foliage mound.
    • Thin individual worn leaves throughout the growing season when needed to keep the plant looking fresh.
    • Apply a light organic mulch around the root zone while keeping the crown uncovered.

Interesting Notes About FYRE WING™ JADEITE CORAL BELLS

  • Jadeite Is a Serious Gem: Jadeite is one of the two mineral species commonly associated with true jade, prized for centuries for its toughness, beauty, and range of green colors. That gemstone connection makes 'Jadeite' an especially fitting name for foliage that gleams emerald-green beneath moisture.
  • The Fuzz Has a Purposeful Personality: Those tiny hairs covering the leaves are called trichomes, microscopic structures found on many plants. On 'Jadeite,' they give the foliage its unusually soft, textured appearance and help transform ordinary drops of water into tiny points of sparkle.
  • Green Broke the Lace-Lock: 'Jadeite' is particularly important within the FYRE WING™ collection because it represents the first reliably expressed green form of the series' distinctive lace-leaf trait. Its color shows that the extraordinary foliage architecture does not need dramatic pigmentation to make an impression.
  • Born From an Unexpected Oddity: The FYRE WING™ breeding story began with a rare leaf mutation discovered on 'Delta Dawn' coral bells. Rather than overlooking the unusual foliage, breeders propagated and evaluated it before years of selection helped develop the distinctive wing-like forms seen throughout the series.
  • Seven Treasures Under One Crown: 'Jadeite' belongs to the original FYRE WING™ collection known as "The Seven of the Lace Crown." Its companions—'Amber,' 'Heliodor,' 'Hematite,' 'Jet,' 'Rhodonite,' and 'Spinel'—were each given gemstone-inspired names that connect the plants to the series' dragon-hoard mythology.
