  1. FUYU ASIAN PERSIMMON

    Diospyros kaki Fuyu

Fuyu Asian Persimmon is the most widely grown persimmon variety in the world—and for good reason. This non-astringent cultivar produces deep orange, tomato-shaped fruits that are crisp, sweet, and ready to eat right off the tree—no waiting required. Its slightly drooping branches, glossy green leaves, and rich fall color make it an elegant specimen in the landscape, while its fruit delivers a flavor profile often compared to pears, brown sugar, dates, and cinnamon. As it ripens, the firm texture softens to a smooth, custard-like consistency, but it never develops the bitter astringency common in other persimmons like 'Hachiya'. Most fruits are seedless, though 1–2 seeds may occasionally be present depending on cultivation.

Fuyu Asian Persimmon fruits are incredibly versatile in the kitchen and the garden. Eaten firm, they can be sliced into salads, paired with cheeses, wrapped in prosciutto, or served on toast. When soft, they're ideal for baking into cakes, tarts, puddings, and breads, or blended into sauces, smoothies, jams, and jellies. You can also slice and dry them into chewy snacks or freeze them whole to enjoy as a spoonable, custard-like treat. In traditional Chinese medicine, persimmons are used to balance body heat and promote healthy skin and digestion. Culturally symbolic, they are gifted during weddings and the Lunar New Year in Asia to express prosperity, eternal love, and good fortune.

A hardy and self-pollinating tree, Fuyu Asian Persimmon prefers full sun and well-drained, loamy soil. It typically begins bearing fruit in just 3–4 years. It tolerates heat well, requires minimal maintenance, and produces reliably heavy crops in fall. Its large, smooth fruit holds well on the tree and in storage—lasting up to two weeks in the fridge or several months frozen. Whether planted for its visual appeal or its culinary rewards, Fuyu Asian Persimmon is a true four-season performer and an exceptional choice for edible landscaping.
